How to Install Akupanel Acoustic Wood Slat Panels

Akupanel acoustic panels are wood or laminate slats mounted on a recycled PET felt backer. They go up with construction adhesive or with screws into furring strips, on walls or ceilings. Tools and materials

• Construction adhesive, or screws (at least 3.5 × 35 mm) and 45 mm furring strips
• Fine-tooth jigsaw for the slats and a sharp utility knife for the felt
• Level, tape measure, and drill
• Black or color-matched screws for the cleanest finish

Prepare the wall

The wall should be in good overall condition. Repair holes before you start, and clean the wall if you are gluing the panels.

Method 1: construction adhesive (drywall and other sound walls)

1. Run a small bead of construction adhesive along the edges of the panel back and down the middle.
2. Press the panel onto the wall and check it with a level.
3. Hold the panel in place with pin nails, screws, or bracing while the adhesive dries. Follow the adhesive maker's set and dry times.

Method 2: screws into furring strips or studs

1. Fix 45 mm (about 1-3/4 in.) furring strips to the wall or ceiling at 600 mm (about 24 in.) centers, running perpendicular to the slats.
2. Screw each panel to the strips through the felt between the slats, where the screw heads disappear. The manufacturer uses 15 screws per panel, at minimum in the corners and the center.
3. For extra sound absorption, fill the cavity between the strips with 45 mm insulation before hanging the panels.

Ceilings

Use the furring-strip method, cut panels to drop into a suspended ceiling grid, or hang full-length panels from threaded eye bolts on aircraft cable at the height you want.

Cutting

Cut slats with a fine-tooth jigsaw and the felt backer with a sharp knife. Dry-fit panels before you glue or screw them.

Cleaning

Spot clean the PET felt with a mild, water-free cleaner. Wipe the slats with a clean cloth and a non-chlorine, non-ammonia cleaner.
