How to apply EcoDomo Stratto peel-and-stick recycled leather veneer to walls, cabinetry, and furniture: surface prep, temperature, rolling, and cure time.
Stratto RLV is EcoDomo's recycled leather veneer with a factory-applied peel-and-stick adhesive (3M 9505 transfer tape). It goes on walls, cabinetry, and furniture. This guide follows EcoDomo's Stratto installation instructions.
Before you start
- Install only on finished surfaces. Do not apply Stratto to bare sheetrock, raw plywood, or MDF.
- Let the veneer and the surface sit at room temperature for at least 24 hours. Do not install below 50°F (10°C).
Tools and materials
- Utility knife and a straight edge
- Primer, roller, and 120-grit sandpaper (for walls)
- Acetone-based cleaner and lint-free cloths (for cabinetry and furniture)
- J-roller with a curved handle. Firm roller pressure is what bonds the adhesive; fingers or a cloth are not enough
- A small needle for air bubbles; 3M Primer 94 for low-energy surfaces such as powder-coated metal or HDPE
Prepare the surface
Walls: clean the wall, apply one coat of primer to porous walls such as drywall or plaster, let it dry, then lightly sand with 120-grit and wipe clean.
Pre-finished cabinetry and furniture: lightly sand with 120-grit to cut the gloss, then wipe with an acetone-based cleaner. Avoid silicone-based cleaners.
Apply the veneer
- Measure the area and cut the veneer slightly oversized with a knife and straight edge.
- Peel the backing from one corner, working in sections rather than removing it all at once.
- Line the veneer up with the top edge and press it down gradually as you peel.
- Go over the whole surface right away with the J-roller, using firm, even pressure.
- Trim the overhang with the knife and straight edge.
- Prick any air bubbles with the needle and press them flat.
- Re-roll any area that feels loose, then leave the surface alone for 24 to 48 hours while the adhesive cures.
