Interlam Barnwood Brown Oak is a genuine real-wood veneer designed to bring the texture, knots, grain variation and natural markings associated with reclaimed wood into architectural interiors without requiring the weight and thickness of solid reclaimed lumber. Rather than reproducing wood character with a printed surface, Barnwood uses an actual thin layer of wood, allowing the material to retain the irregularity and surface character that make natural wood visually distinctive.
The Brown Oak pattern is supplied as part of the Interlam Barnwood veneer collection for designers, architects, millworkers and fabricators seeking a lightweight wood surfacing material that can be handled similarly to a decorative laminate. The veneer is fleece backed, pre-sanded and engineered to provide dimensional stability while remaining considerably more flexible than a conventional rigid wood panel. This combination makes it practical for a broad range of vertical and millwork applications where the appearance of real wood is important but a thick solid-wood assembly is unnecessary.
Sheet Size, Thickness & Physical Properties
Standard Barnwood sheets measure 4' x 8' with an approximate nominal thickness of 1 mm. Roos lists the finished thickness range as .038-.048 inches, plus or minus .005 inch. A standard 4' x 8' sheet weighs approximately 6.9 pounds, making the veneer substantially easier to handle than solid reclaimed boards or thick wood panels. The listed bending radius is 4-6 inches, allowing the material to accommodate appropriately designed curved or radiused surfaces while preserving the character of real wood.
Why Specify Barnwood Veneer?
Barnwood combines the visual and tactile qualities of natural wood with several handling advantages commonly associated with laminate surfacing. The backing provides stability and flexibility, while the thin real-wood face allows exposed edges to avoid the dark line that can be visible with some conventional laminate constructions. The system is designed to resist bubbling, blistering and telegraphing when properly fabricated, and the veneer is described as highly resistant to tearing and dimensional shrinkage.
- Real wood surface: genuine grain, knots, texture, figure and natural markings.
- Lightweight construction: approximately 6.9 lb per standard 4' x 8' sheet.
- Flexible: listed 4-6 inch bending radius for suitable curved applications.
- Pre-sanded: reduces preparation before finishing and fabrication.
- Dimensionally stable: designed to resist shrinkage and common surfacing issues.
- Clean edge appearance: applies like laminate without the typical dark laminate edge.
Finishing & Fabrication
The veneer arrives pre-sanded and can be pre-finished before laminating, giving fabricators additional control over the final appearance and finishing workflow. Because Barnwood is real wood, finishing methods should be selected with the desired color, sheen and level of protection in mind. The collection is intended to accept a wide range of adhesives, and Roos specifically identifies three recommended adhesive systems: water-based contact adhesive with a flexible glue line, solvent-based contact adhesive with a flexible glue line, and urea formaldehyde resin.
The water-resistant backing is intended to help support the use of water-based adhesives while also acting as a moisture barrier. As with any architectural veneer installation, the substrate should be properly prepared and the selected adhesive and finishing system should be evaluated for the specific fabrication method, substrate and environmental conditions of the project.
Architectural & Interior Applications
Interlam Barnwood Brown Oak can be specified anywhere a thin, authentic wood surface is preferred over a thick reclaimed-wood assembly. Its large sheet format makes it especially useful for continuous architectural surfaces and fabricated components. Typical design uses include feature and accent walls, reception areas, hospitality interiors, retail fixtures, restaurant interiors, casework, cabinetry, furniture facings, columns, display elements, built-ins and custom architectural millwork. The flexible construction can also support selected radiused details where the substrate and fabrication method are appropriate for the published bending radius.
Natural Wood Variation & Panel Layout
Because Barnwood is made from real wood, variation is an intentional part of the material. These veneers are not selected from individual flitches, so differences in color, grain, texture and figure should be expected from sheet to sheet. Natural cracking and knots may also be visible on the face. Roos identifies these conditions as normal characteristics of real wood rather than defects in the veneer.
Panel-to-panel pattern alignment cannot be guaranteed. For installations covering multiple sheets, the design professional should account for natural transitions in the material rather than assuming continuous grain matching. Frames, reveals, shadow gaps, trim details or intentional breaks in the elevation can be incorporated where a controlled transition between adjacent sheets is important to the design.
Design Intent
Barnwood Brown Oak is best specified when the project calls for the authenticity and variation of genuine wood but benefits from a thin, lightweight and fabrication-friendly surface. The result is a material that can introduce the depth and individuality associated with reclaimed wood while fitting more easily into contemporary wall, furniture and millwork assemblies.
